| [I] Hello [message #276937] |
Fr, 02 Juni 2006 21:49 |
|
Hi all. I haven't posted here before, but I thought it was about time I did
and so... erm.. here I am.
Hi.
Again.
I'm a fairly recent (say the last 18 months) Pratchett fan compared to some
if not most of you and assume many of you have been here (well... not *here*
exactly, but you get the idea) since the 'beginning'.
I have been reading here for around six months, but didn't really have
anything to add or say until now.
Except to say that I'm sorry to hear about PTerry's recent loss and that
hardly seemed an appropriate time to introduce myself. I hope he and his
family are coming to terms with it and am sure they will eventually feel
better in themselves. Having recently lost my father I would like to think I
might know some of the things that go through our minds at such times.
Over to another, happier subject altogether.
In the 18 or so months, since I started reading and indeed collecting
everything Pratchett/Discworld. I've managed to pick things up through
various (all legal I hasten to add) means such as bookshops, bootsales,
charity shops and ebay (well... basically those four places really.)
Since reading the second book, which I first read years ago as a child,
promptly forgot about until I re-read it recently and recognised it as 'that
funny fantasy book I couldn't remember the name of', I then read the first.
I've never been one for orthodox methodology. Or it seems, short and
sense-making sentences.
Anyway, I have been hooked ever since and have managed to pick up paperback
and/or hardback copies of every DW book there is (I believe, unless there
are actually more than 29 'main' books up to Thud!) plus most of Pterry's
other non-DW stuff and many other DW/TP bits and bobs.
I admit that I haven't read all of the books yet, but I am currently reading
through my tenth. I have read 7 of the earlier DW books in no particular
order (see above) and have enjoyed each one massively. I look forward to
catching up on the rest.
I generally read when on holiday or at the weekend, which is why I may
appear to be a bit of a slow reader. Which I'm not. Honest.
Anyway, after all that nonsense I'll get to my point. I discovered
Clarecraft about a week after they closed down. The only way I can purchase
stuff á la Clarecraft is through ebay. I was until recently using
Clarecrafts own website as a 'catalogue' to see what I might take a look for
next. It vanished over the weekend. Damn.
Does anyone know if there is a 'complete' Clarecraft Discworld catalogue
available? I've tried various links through google and they all come up
dead. Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Even if they are
regarding my attrocious punctuation or spelling. (Broken spellcheck in
Outlook, oook)
I hope nobody here has been blinded by my chatter, or fallen asleep due to
boredom and that those still reading aren't expecting a punch-line. There
isn't one and this is not the worlds most elaborate joke. Sorry. Any replies
would be greatly appreciated.
One day I might even post again if I have anything else worthy of saying.
Looking forward to (buying) Wintersmith.
And hopefully by then I might even be on my twelfth book.
Bye for now.

Hi Alan, you're right, Clarecraft do seem to have closed down, but you
can still buy a lot of other Pratchett merchandise at the L-space
"merchandise" section. I'm sure you must be able to find something you
like there through their other "Bonsai Trading" stuff - it's still a big
selection of stuff to choose from!
All the best

Well, he's not allowed to.
There are laws about that sort of thing you know.
But I'm sure he keeps his bits nicely polished and cleaned, just waiting
for a chance to get out on the shooting range.
Um... we are talking about weapons here, right?

Well, I am. I'm not sure what she's on about, though.
Although my airsoft guns get a fair bit of use.
We should have an airsoft meet some time.

Hi Alan,
have chocolate, alligators, purple goats etc.
Sofie is right, the merchandise section has some useful links and its
often worth firing of an email to John Pagan at Bonsaidiscworld (blame
me :)) or the other dealers to tell them what you are looking for.
Elton Murphy's collectors guild could also be a good place to look:
http://www.thecollectorsguild.com/shop/
I'm not a collector myself but I know many collectors have used both of
these.

Sounds like you speak from experience here?
(Now how anyone can refuse a freshly brewed cup of Kenya AA is beyond me.
But while I can't understand it, I gracefully accept it.)

Only theory, but yes, I have come clean about the extent of my research.

Don't be so sure. There's a lot of Germans in the SF fandom who try to
show some degree of smugness by drinking tea, no doubt inspired by
ST:TNG and DNA.

I started drinking tea when Lem was all SF within my reach.
How's Lem on the smugness scale?

Don't know about smugness, but he's definitely rather high on the SF
cool exclusivity scale, I think.
But didn't you have access to Karel Capek? And the Sturgasky brothers?
I was rather lucky in that regard, as there was a couple of really keen
Swedish SF fans who were also publishers, and sitting in the middle of
the cold war friction zone, they reckoned Swedes would appreciate SF
from both sides of the curtain.

The only urn worth having is the stainless steel BURCO, at least 30 litres
but bigger if you can get one. Needs quite a large chain to hang it round
your neck though.

I believe Karel Capek was the first SF&F author I ever read[1], at age 5 or
6. I can't remember the title of the book, but I remember that it was about
intelligent salamanders, but *really* about Nazism and Hitler.
[1]: Not counting works of multiple authors, like an unabridged "1001
Nights" and the bible.

*looks up from nice cup of tea*
Someone's offering me around now? *blink*
Art, stop that at once! It'll be the naughty corner for you...
(Unless that was what you were hoping for, obviously... :-)
Apart from which, you know how it is round here - offer one person a
CCA and then nearly everyone'll want one!
